After the deluge …
… of this morning’s drive time, coastal Seal Beach seemed to be making out okay. Some photos taken just after this morning’s 10:25 am. 6.30-foot high tide, clockwise from top right: 1) The First Street jetty where rain runoff and high tide combined to bring the water close to the top of the rocks. 2) Waves push across the beach to the south of the Seal Beach Pier, nearly reaching the foot of the berm. The houses behind remain safe and dry, with only some rain puddling along the beachfront walkway. 3) Waves continue roll in under the pier, but the handful of seasoned wave watchers, who came out to the pier after the rain stopped, were unimpressed. “This is nothing,” one told me, recalling winter storms that broke over the pier itself. 4) The beach was deserted, except for groups of gulls waiting out the storm. Sunset Beach update: The Los Angeles Times reports that “the combination of high tide and heavy rain left parts of low-lying Sunset Beach washed out, with at least one home in danger of flooding. An Orange County Fire Authority crew worked to secure a yellow house at the corner of 15th Street and Pacific Avenue, pumping standing water across the road and stacking sandbags against a wall to divert flood waters.” Read more at the LAT.
Water warnings: Long Beach safety officials remind us of what we should already know: Rains wash bacteria and other pollutants into the ocean, so we should stay out of the water for at least 72 hours heavy rainfall. Read more at the Press-Telegram.
