New SB market: farm fresh for holidays
I stopped by the new Seal Beach Farmers Market this morning and scooped up a fresh bounty of salad fixings for this week’s holiday feasting. The market is modest, just two aisles of tents in the parking lot at Seal Beach Boulevard and Westminster Avenue. But there’s a nice selection of organic produce from farmers who come here every Tuesday from Garden Grove, Escondido, and Rancho Cucamonga, and even as far away as Fresno and Salinas.
The deal of the day: five plump, beautiful avocados for $4. “What they’re selling they grow themselves, fresh picked this morning or yesterday,” says Joe Honescko, who manages the weekly market.
Along with produce, today’s offerings include fresh baked bread and pies, nuts and salsa, and some lovely orchids and snowy white hydrangeas. The market is open until 1 pm, so there’s still time to shop. Usually, there’s a tent selling fresh-cut flowers, too, but the flower lady had a flat tire this morning on the drive from Ventura.
Honescko said the farmers market began several weeks ago in response to requests from nearby Leisure World residents who wanted a market to replace the grocery that closed in the Seal Beach Village shopping center. The market is open 9am-1pm on Tuesdays, outside the Roger Dunn Golf Shop, but will not be at the center next week, Dec. 30. The farmers market returns in January.
[Thanks for the shopping tip, Erik]
