Did you feel the mystery shake?

Last night around 9:15 p.m. hundreds of residents across Orange county said they felt an “eerie earthquake-like shaking,” according to OC Register ScienceDude, Gary Robbins. The mystery? USGS says there was no quake; National Weather Service says there was no micro-blast, Edwards Air Force base says there was no shuttle landing. Read more — including lots of descriptions of resident’s experience of the event — at ocregister.com.

Update 4:00 p.m. ScienceDude reports that CalTech says the shaking is consistent with a sonic boom moving onshore at around Dana Point. Read more at the ocregister.com.

Update 2 p.m. Thursday Mar. 5: Mystery shaking in OC leads ScienceDude to open X-file.

The French doors rattled. My gaze on the cable TV shifted to the black panes of glass. They moved not a fraction. Rattling continued and I thought we must be experiencing an earthquake. My science-trained eyes landed on the walls looking for evidence of a quake. Observations of the walls showed no quivering, no altered planes of drywall, no parallels out of whack. Relieved that the Big One was not occurring, I resumed my reality based crime show.

After reading the news here, I’m glad to know that it was not my own crazy misperception but that a real event took place in the physical world after all.

Apparently this happened in Central CA, too, but at **9:15 in the morning**, not 9:15 at night???
