Putting Seal Beach back on the map
The city may soon replace its antiquated visitor’s map of Seal Beach, which features numerous long-departed businesses, City Hall phone numbers in the 213 area code, and census figures dating back to 1980. Printed in 1986, the free map is still available at Seal Beach City Hall. It announces, “The City is the home of Rockwell-International…”
At tonight’s meeting, the City Council will review a spring budget revision that includes a $5,000 estimate for creating a current map of the city, said City Clerk Linda Devine. The new map would update local boundaries and development, and highlight Seal Beach shopping areas and other points of interest, she said.
The idea for the map comes from the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, which has offered to assist with the project. “We’re still starting to talk with the chamber as to what type of map they’d want us to develop,” Devine said.
During the past week, the chamber’s leadership has urged Seal Beach business owners and residents to attend tonight’s City Council meeting and speak out on behalf of local merchants who are struggling in the current economic downturn. The chamber wants the council to do more to assist economic development in town.
“Can’t we brainstorm together to help save jobs, income for residents, keep the events and the character that is our town?” “Seth Eaker, the chamber’s vice president wrote in a guest column in Thursday’s Sun.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at 211 Eighth Street.
