Scoping out a wider 405: Transportation agencies seek public comments
State and county transportation agencies have scheduled a series of community meetings on a project that would widen the 405 freeway between the I-605 exchange in Rossmoor and the Corona del Mar freeway (SR-73).
Residents and commuters can attend the meetings hosted by the Orange County Transportation Authority and the California Department of Transportation and comment on proposals being considered for the San Diego Freeway Improvement Project. Public comments will be used in the development of the project’s Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Report, the agencies say.
From the OCTA: “Alternatives [being considered] include adding one or two general purpose lanes in each direction, adding one general purpose lane and one toll lane in each direction, adding one general purpose lane at various locations and improving various interchanges or a no-build alternative. Currently, all the alternatives can be constructed generally within the existing right-of-way.”
An OCTA overview says the agency is proposing the widening project because the 405 is one of the nation’s most congested freeways — used by more than 300,000 drivers in some areas each day — and traffic volumes are expected to increase about 20 percent by 2030.
The Orange County Register reports that “more than $400 million in Measure M funds is allocated to the project … which is expected to cost up to $1.7 billion.”
The scoping meetings are scheduled from 6 – 8 p.m. There will be a a project overview presentation from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Dates and locations:
- Tuesday, Sept. 22: Fountain Valley Senior Center, 17967 Bushard St. in Fountain Valley
- Wednesday, Sept. 23: Huntington Beach Public Library, 7111 Talbert Ave. in Huntington Beach
- Wednesday, Sept. 30: Westminster Community Services Facility, 8200 Westminster Ave. in Westminster
