Seal Beach Council weighs donation cap for city elections, honors local residents
The Seal Beach City Council asked the city’s staff tonight to draw up a proposed ordinance that would limit individuals and groups to contributing no more than $250 in city elections.
Councilman Charles Antos suggested the donation cap after expressing concern about the influx of large donations during the bitter 2008 election battle over height limits in Old Town.
The council will vote on the proposed campaign limits at a future meeting.
In other action tonight, council members joined a representative from state Sen Tom Harman’s office in lauding Kim and Stever Masoner, the founders of Save our Beach, for ten years of community service.

“Save Our Beach is an organization whose mission is simple: to pick up trash off the beach,” said Kevin Gihooley, who presented the Masoners with a certificate of senatorial recognition. “But simple acts lead to profound results. Save our Beach’s regular clean ups have encouraged hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens, springing them into action to preserve and protect our coastline.”
The council also honored Orange County Fire Authority Captain Larry Bender and Engineer Bernie Nap for their 35 years of service and recognized Joey Callanan for being named as a “Junior Lifeguard of the Year” by the California Surf Lifesaving Association.
